North Wilkesboro Speedway Welcomes Back Race Fans
NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. – It has been 27 years since North Wilkesboro Speedway has had cars on the track or fans in the stands. Of course, that all changes with the running of the All Star Race and while drivers have to wait a few more days, the fans did not.
Hundreds of fans had the chance to see for the first time all the work that has brought this track back to life over the last few months to get it ready for Nascar’s All Star Race. For some fans like Mark Canter, who grew up and still lives in North Wilkesboro, it was a chance to think back to days gone by.
“When I was a kid I used to come down here in the infield an sit around the tires with Richard Petty and David Pearson and all the old drivers like Bobby Allison,” said Canter.
“I am his daughter, so it is cool to see. I never got to come when racing was here, so to actually be able to come for a race. I came to the race in August, so it good to have it back here. It is cool. I think it is bringing racing back to it’s roots and I like that,” said Madison Church.
During the open house, race fans had a chance to stand in Victory Lane, check out some late model cars and get some autographs. Some even had the chance to act like a flagman dropping the green flag.
“How cool is it to be here today at this historic track?”
The Sheets answered “It is unreal. It is wonderful. I am so glad. We were here in August and this is nothing like it was in August. This is so cool. I have been looking forward to this since 96.”
Now the wait is over. It is time to go racing at North Wilkesboro in just under two weeks where more history will be made on this historic track.
