Young Lady's Need For Speed Found In Her DNA
Meet Camrie Caruso, who started racing at the age of 8. You could say her need for speed is found in her DNA.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — “This is a product of the CMS Student-Athlete Advisory Council and this has been about four months in the making. It all started from an idea back in October,” says Johnathan Burch of Butler High School.
“It’s all about creating spaces where our students can thrive and they have done an amazing job. They got the sponsors for the event. They did all of this on their own. You know we have the adults in the background helping, pushing them toward the resources, but they took the leadership role and made this night happen,” says Ericia Turner, Executive Director of Athletics at CMS.
From that idea was born the Inaugural CMS Athletics All-Star Gala, an event created by, run by and led by students from CMS.
Awards were handed out in every sport as student-athletes, parents, coaches and athletic directors looked on. For Burch, a senior from Butler High School and the president of the Student-Athletic Advisory Council, it was the first of many All-Star Galas to come.
“This event, I would like to see the Student-Athletic Advisory Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Athletics grow a lot more. Connecting with our community a lot more. So we are getting back into the community some more and holding bigger events for our student-athletes to come together,” says Burch.
“And it was not just about the x’s and o’s and it was not about competing. They come together from across the district, different schools across the district working together on this program, so I am excited to see that,” says Turner.
