Since December of last year, Bahakel Sports Director, Jeff Taylor has sat down with athletes, coaches and others to talk about the high school sports scene in Charlotte.
Olympic Is On Top And Wants To Stay There
CHARLOTTE, NC – The Olympic High School football team made a name for themselves in the past few seasons, but still feel they are overlooked.
The Trojans took over the Southmeck conference by storm last season, crowned champions with an undefeated conference record. But you would not guess it from talking to the Trojans.
After an early postseason exit at the hands of the Independence Patriots, the players sole focus is to prove themselves as a powerhouse program.
“Like I know it is cool but we just got something to prove. Even though we went eleven-and-one people still don’t believe in us all the way, so we just got something to prove,” said junior running back Devin Walker.
“Last years team is last years team. We gotta move on, so that is a big thing we gotta work on,” said junior middle linebacker Jyron Tosi.
The conference landscape saw a significant shift last season, with the debut of a brand new opponent in the conference. Which is part of the reason why the Trojans army dwindled in both size and age.
Head Coach Brandon Thompson is no stranger to struggle, and knows what will take this team to the next level.
“Team first. I mean the only way we are gonna win with forty guys is be team first. So some of these guys are going to have to play a little iron man football and play you know seventy, eighty snaps a game you know what I mean. We are going to put them in the best position to be successful in how we prepare in practice. We are going to have to be creative a little bit in our approach but you know being team first that goes from myself, coordinators, assistant coaches to all of the players, everybody involved. We gotta be team first in order to be successful this year,” said Coach Thompson.
Success is a key part of any teams motivation, but beyond that the Trojans have another mission. The first back-to-back conference championship is school history.
Yeah I mean it is tough. We are in one of the toughest conferences in the state. Again we are in Charlotte so it is a very good brand of football. So to be able to win back-to-back, it will be tough, but it will be a huge accomplishment to do that so we are just going to take it one game at a time.
The Trojans begin their quest to do so on Friday, August 18, 2023 at home against West Mecklenburg High School in the inaugural Air Traffic Classic.
